Meet the 2014 Merit Scholars

 

Adriana Diaz  Natural Sciences: Biology  Bergen Community College

Adriana Diaz of Mahwah is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Adriana is a student at Bergen Community College studying Biology. After receiving her associate degree in Biology, Adriana hopes to enroll in a four-year college for her bachelor’s degree. Her goal is to eventually attend medical school.

Anthony Freye General Science Bergen Community College

Anthony Freyre II of Highland Mills is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Montclair State University. Anthony is a student at Bergen Community College studying General Science. Anthony plans on transferring to a four-year university to achieve a bachelor’s degree in Science. He hopes to one day attend medical school to become a doctor of sports medicine.

Fady Isaac Chemistry Bergen Community College

Fady Issac of River Edge is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship sponsored by General Magnaplate. Fady is a student at Bergen Community College, and he is majoring in Chemistry. Fady has a 3.8 GPA and tutors his fellow community college students. He plans on becoming a pharmacist.

Fernando Rojas Pre-Professional Scientific Program Passaic County Community College

Fernando Rojas of Paterson is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship by Bristol-Myers Squibb. Fernando is a student at Passaic County Community College in the Pre-Professional Scientific program. He is a member of the Science Club and Trio Student Support Services Program. Fernando plans on pursing medical school and is interested in becoming a pediatric neurologist.

Fizza Sulaiman Biology Middlesex County College

Fizza Sulaiman of North Brunswick is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Merck & Co. Fizza is a student at Middlesex County College studying Biology. She has worked at her school’s dental and medical offices and is currently working in the Health and Safety nurse’s office on campus. After completing community college, Fizza hopes to study Cell Biology and apply to a physician assistant program.

Jennifer Muniz Radiography  Passaic County Community College

Jennifer Muniz of Clifton is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals. Jennifer is a student at Passaic County College studying Radiography. She is an EMT and is employed by Pulse Medical Transportation. After college, Jennifer plans to become a licensed radiology technician.

Jorge Rodan Engineering Science Bergen Community College

Jorge Roldan of Passaic is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Casabona Ventures. Jorge is a student at Bergen Community College studying Engineering Science. He is a member of the STEM Club and Vice President of Scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa. Jorge also tutors science and math on campus. After college, Jorge wants to obtain his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and conduct research on renewable energy.

Kirkland Czajowski General Science: Chemistry, Biology Warren County Community College

Kirkland Czajowski of Washington is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Merck & Co. Kirkland is a student at Warren County Community College studying General Science. In his free time, he volunteers at Matheny School and Medical Center for kids with Cerebral Palsy. After college, Kirkland hopes to attend medical school to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor.

Luis Wettel Bergen Community College Engineering

Luis Wettel of Lodi is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Exxon Mobil Research & Engineering Company. Luis is a student at Bergen Community College studying Engineering. He is specifically interested in Chemical Engineering, and he maintains a 3.9 GPA. After college, Luis hopes to use his degree to contribute to technology development in America.

Mariia Alibekova Engineering Science Bergen Community College

Mariia Alibekova of Elmwood Park is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Mariia is a student at Bergen Community College studying Engineering Science. She is a member of the STEM club, as well as the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle team on campus. Mariia is also a chemistry and math tutor. After college, Mariia plans to use her Chemical Engineering degree to work in pharmaceuticals, concentrating in cancer treatment research.

Pavel Sokolov Mathematics Bergen Community College

Pavel Sokolov of Fair Lawn is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship sponsored by the Board of Directors at the R&D Council of New Jersey. Pavel is a student at Bergen County Community College studying Mathematics. He is a member of the STEM club, Mathematics club, the Honors Association, as well as Phi Theta Kappa. After college, Pavel hopes to pursue his Ph.D. in Theoretical Mathematics.

Peri Akiva Mechanical Engineering MIddlesex County College

Peri Akiva of New Brunswick is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Stevens Institute of Technology. Peri is a student at Middlesex County College studying Mechanical Engineering. He has served three years in the military service as an experimental analyst in the aerospace division. After college, Peri plans to specialize in field and space robotics in hopes of one day becoming a member of the research team at NASA.

Ricardo Rivas Nursing Hudson County Community College

Ricardo Rivas of Jersey City is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Ricardo is a student at Hudson County Community College (HCCC) and is studying Nursing. He currently works at the Controller’s Office at HCCC and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Rivas hopes to one day become an anesthesiologist.

Sarai Banda Nursing Bergen Community College

Sarai Banda of Cliffside Park is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Sarai is a student at Bergen Community College studying Nursing. She is a member of the Nursing Students Association, Black Student Union, and Phi Theta Kappa. After college, Sarai plans to pursue her bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

Sylvia Mohammed Biomedical Science Cumberland County Community College

Sylvia Mohammed of Vineland is awarded with a 2014 Merit Scholarship sponsored by the R&D Council of New Jersey. Sylvia is a student at Cumberland County College studying Biomedical Science. She is a member of Health Occupation Students of American (HOSA). Additionally, she is a math tutor. Sylvia hopes to transfer to a four-year college to attain her bachelor’s degree in Biology. Her goal is to become an anesthesiologist.
