Meet the 2018 Merit Scholars

Brian Aguirre

Brian Aguirre is awarded a 2018 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Nokia Bell Labs. Brian (Elmwood, NJ) attends Bergen County Community College and is studying information technology, with a focus on networking administration. He is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society. After completion of his associate degree, he plans to transfer to a four-year college and complete his bachelor’s degree. He then wants to complete his master’s degree in cybersecurity.

 

Michael Allers

Michael Allers is awarded a 2018 Merit Scholarship sponsored by BASF. Michael (Frenchtown, NJ) attends Raritan Valley County Community College and is studying environmental science. He has been a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society and the environmental club. Michael would like to get his master’s degree and Ph.D. in the future.

 

 

Lauren Choi

Lauren Choi is awarded a 2018 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Avantor. Lauren (Jersey City, NJ) attends Hudson County Community College and studies nursing. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honorary society. She often participates in blood drives in her area, and does volunteer work for her local community. After Lauren completes her bachelor’s degree, she then wants to continue on to a nursing practitioner program.

Sarra Hayoune

Sarra Hayoune is awarded a 2018 Merit Scholarship sponsored by the R&D Council. Sarra (Jersey City, NJ) attends Hudson County Community College and studies computer science. She is the president of the STEM club, member of Sigma Kappa Delta Honorary Society, and vice-president of her school’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society. In 2018, Sarra was an America Needs You fellow and a Coca Cola Leaders of Promise scholar. She plans to transfer to a four-year college and then pursue a master’s degree in artificial intelligence.

Said Koubane

Said Koubane is awarded a 2018 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Avantor. Said (Jersey City, NJ) attends Hudson County Community College and studies engineering science. He is a member of the National Society for Leadership and Success and Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society. Said plans to transfer to a New Jersey four-year college and would like to complete his master’s degree in aerospace engineering.

 

Matthew Kravetsky

Matthew Kravetsky is awarded a 2018 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Merck. Matthew (Asbury, NJ) attends Raritan County Community College and studies mechanical engineering. He is a member of the Boys Scouts and the entrepreneurial club. Matthew plans to continue his education and obtain his bachelor’s degree.

 

 

Mykhailo Malko

Mykhailo Malko is awarded a 2018 Merit Scholarship sponsored by the R&D Council. Mykhailo (Fair Lawn, NJ) attends Bergen County Community College and studies electrical engineering. He is a member of STEM club, where he is working on an electric sports bike project. Mykhailo will continue his education at a four-year college and complete his bachelor’s degree.

Ann Boby Mathews

Ann Boby Mathews is awarded a 2018 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Avantor. Ann Boby (Jersey City, NJ) attends Hudson County Community College. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society. Ann Boby plans to transfer to a four-year college and complete her bachelor’s degree in biology. She then wants to complete continue her education to achieve a terminal degree in psychiatry.

 

Jamie Officer

Jamie Officer is awarded a 2018 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Casabona Ventures. Jamie (Cherry Hill, NJ) attends Camden County Community College and studies computer science. He is a member of the chess club. Jamie would like to transfer to a four-year college and complete his bachelor’s degree.

 

 

Ami Reader

Ami Reader is awarded a 2018 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Novartis. Ami (Bellmawr, NJ) attends Camden County Community College and studies chemistry and forensic science. She is the president of chemistry club, and a member of Phi Theta Kappa honors society. Ami would like to obtain a master’s degree in chemistry or forensics chemistry.

 

 

Abderahim Salhi

Abderahim Salhi is awarded a 2018 Merit Scholarship sponsored by the R&D Council. Abderahim (Jersey City, NJ) attends Hudson County Community College and studies computer science. He is the president of Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society at his college and vice-president of the STEM club. During 2018, Abderahim was a Pearson Scholar and an America Needs You fellow. He will complete his associate degree and then plans to transfer to a four-year college.

Fardeen Syed

Fardeen Syed is awarded a 2018 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Avantor. Fardeen (Jersey City, NJ) attends Hudson County Community College and studies accounting. He is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society. Fardeen plans transfer to a New Jersey four-year college after completion of his associate degree.

 

Adelajda Turku

Adelajda Turku is awarded a 2018 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Novartis. Adelajda (Elmwood, NJ) attends Bergen County Community College and studies natural sciences and mathematics. She is the project leader of EEG (STEM), and a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society where she received the “Five Star Competitive Edge Star” certification. Adelajda plans to complete her bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, and later pursue her Ph.D. in neurobiology.

 

Nghia Vo

Nghia Vo is awarded a 2018 Merit Scholarship sponsored by the R&D Council. Nghia (Jersey City, NJ) attends Hudson County Community College. He is a member of the STEM club and tutors at his schools tutoring center. Nghia will be transferring to a four-year college to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science.

She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society. Ngoc would like to complete her bachelor’s degree at a New Jersey four-year college.
