Meet the 2017 Merit Scholars

Christopher Cabaron

Christopher Cabaron is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by the Research & Development Council of New Jersey. Christopher (Roselle, NJ) is majoring in electrical engineering at Union County College and maintains a 3.8 GPA. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society. Christopher works full-time at the Laboratory Corporation of America. After completing community college, he plans on becoming a full-time student at New Jersey Institute of Technology. His dream is to become an engineer.

Shrikanta Deoroop

Shrikanta Deoroop is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Merck. Skrikanta (Jersey City, NJ) attends Hudson County Community College and studies computer science. He is a member of the National Society for Leadership and Success and Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society. After completion of his associate’s degree, he plans to transfer to a New Jersey four-year college and complete his Bachelor’s degree. He then wants to complete his master’s degree in computer science.

Edward Gaskin

Edward Gaskin is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by the Research & Development Council of New Jersey. Edward (Rahway, NJ) attends Union County College and studies electrical and computer engineering. He has a 3.8 GPA and is the Committee Leader of Leadership of Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society, the Communications Chair of American Honors. He is also an involved member of Debate Club and Alpha and Omega fraternity. Edward wants to transfer to a four-year university to obtain a bachelor’s degree, and eventually work for a hard-drive or semi-conductor manufacturing company.

Abigail Fabiano

Abigail Fabiano is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Merck. Abigail (Somerville, NJ) attends Raritan Valley Community College and studies chemical engineering and math. She has a 4.0 GPA. Abigail is in the Honor’s College, participates in Rotaract Club, and is a Galileo Scholar. She also works extensively with children, from tutoring, to babysitting, to participating in kids’ music programs. Abigail wants to pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemical engineering, and hopes to make this field her lifelong profession.

Emily Fabiano

Emily Fabiano of is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Merck. Emily (Somerville, NJ) is a mathematics and chemistry major at Raritan Valley Community College, with plans to switch to a mathematics and chemical engineering major. She has a 4.0 GPA. Emily is in the Honor’s College, Rotaract Club, and Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society. She has worked as a music teacher assistant and a manager in the foodservice industry. She wants to attend a four-year institution with a good engineering program, and eventually find a career in STEM where she will be able to help others.

Luz Fletchas

Luz Fletchas is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Merck. Luz (Elizabeth, NJ) is studying biology at Union County College, and maintains a 3.9 GPA. She is a member of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and works part-time as an oncological medical assistant. After completing her community college degree, she plans on becoming a physician’s assistant, and eventually, an oncologist.

Dean Ingram

Dean Ingram is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Merck. Dean (Flemington, NJ) is majoring in engineering at Raritan Valley Community College, with plans to go into the electrical engineering program in the fall. He has a 3.5 GPA and participates in Engineering Club. Dean is also building a quadruped robot and is an Eagle Scout. After graduating from community college, Dean wants to study robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. His goal is to create products that help make humans more efficient.

Mayte Javier

Mayte Javier is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by ExxonMobil. Mayte (Bergenfield, NJ) is at Brookdale Community College and is studying civil engineering. She has a 3.8 GPA and participates in various extra-curricular activities like International Student Association, National Society of Leadership and Success, and Engineering Club. After graduating from Brookdale Community College, she wants to obtain her bachelor’s degree from a four-year institution. She then plans to gain work experience and obtain a master’s degree.

Subhash Kungumaraj

Subhash Kungumaraj is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Casabona Ventures. Subhash (Edison, NJ) is a student at Middlesex County College pursuing associate’s degrees in mathematics, physics, and engineering science. He has a 3.8 GPA. Subhash is the President of STEM Club, and is an active member of Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society, Bio-society, and Circle-K. He presented on thermal imaging and mapping using unmanned aerial vehicles at the Middlesex County College 2016 Fall Science Symposium. Subhash plans to obtain a doctorate degree, specialize in flight dynamics, and eventually work for NASA and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization). He also wants to start a business and promote the hobby of aeromodelling.

Jose Lazarte

Jose Lazarte of is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Celgene. Jose (Garfield, NJ) attends Bergen Community College and is studying computer science. He maintains a 3.5 GPA while working extensively in the field. He has had jobs relating to IT, Web Design, Robotics, and more. Jose plans on continuing his experience in the field through computer science-related internships and plans to work as a software developer.

Steven Monahan

Steven Monahan is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Montclair State University. Steven (Washington, NJ) is studying mechanical engineering at Raritan Valley Community College. He has a 3.8 GPA and is a member of his school’s Honors College. He is also an active member of Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society, Enactus Project Lead, Rotaract, and Future Farmers of America. Steven plans on transferring to a four-year institution and obtaining a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and an MBA. He wants to become a top business executive and potentially sit on various corporate boards.

Andrea Motino

Andrea Motino is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by the Research & Development Council of New Jersey. Andrea (Elizabeth, NJ) is pursuing her associate’s degree in engineering at Union County College (UCC). She has a 3.6 GPA, plays soccer at UCC, and is an involved member of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society. She also participates in the medical brigade organization Hands to Honduras. Andrea plans on obtaining a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with a Green Technologies building certification.

Ahn Nguyen

Ahn Nguyen is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Merck. Ahn (Philadelphia, PA) is a biology major at Camden County College. She is an active member of Chemistry Club and a dedicated proctor and math tutor at Math Lab. She maintains a 3.7 GPA and plans on transferring to Drexel after community college to pursue a biology degree. Her career goal is to become a cardiologist.

Chikwendu Nwachuku

Chikwendu Nwachuku is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by Novartis. Chikwendu (Scotch Plains, NJ) is an electrical engineering student currently at Union County College. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA and has made President’s List every semester during his college career. Chikwendu is an active member of Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society at UCC and has enjoyed playing soccer in high school and college. Chikwendu plans to continue his education at New Jersey Institute of Technology to obtain his bachelor’s degree.

Nicola Sorbara

Nicola Sorbara is awarded a 2017 Merit Scholarship sponsored by the Research & Development Council of New Jersey. Nicola (Manalapan, NJ) is studying mechanical engineering at Brookdale Community College. He has a 3.8 GPA and engages in a number of extra-curricular activities, including Chemistry Club and Modern Martial Arts Academy. After completing community college, Nicola wants to transfer into Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s electromechanical engineering program. He hopes to work as a security/defense system engineer.
