RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL OF NEW JERSEY ANNOUNCES 1999 THOMAS ALVA EDISON PATENT AWARD FINALISTS

Denville, N.J., August 25, 1999 — The Research and Development (R&D) Council of New Jersey has announced the 1999 Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award finalists. One winning patent is selected for each of four categories: Industrial/Defense, Medical/Health, Emerging and Consumer. This year, there are no finalists in the Consumer category.

In the Industrial/Defense category, the finalists include: Engelhard Corporation for their "Large-Pored Crystalline Titanium Molecular Sieve Zeolite;" Lucent Technologies - Bell Laboratories for their patented "Optical Fiber for Wavelength Division Multiplexing;" and Union Carbide Corporation for their "Process for Producing Sticky Polymers."

In the Medical/Health category, the finalists are: ADM Tronics Unlimited, Inc. for their "Electronic Stimulation System for Treating Tinnitus Disorders;" Rutgers University for their patented "Synthesis of Amino Acid-derived Bioerodable Polymers;" and Sabinsa Corporation for their "Use of Piperine to Increase the Bioavailability of Nutritional Compounds."

In the Emerging category the finalists include: ADM Tronics Unlimited, Inc. for their "Electronic Stimulation System for Treating Tinnitus Disorders;" ANADIGICS, Inc. for their patented "Multiple Band Amplifier;" and General Magnaplate Corporation for their "Fabrication of Tooling by Thermal Spraying."

Each year, the R&D Council grants awards for patented inventions to companies and the individuals who created new advances in research and development. The winners will be announced on Thursday, November 18, 1999, at the R&D Council's annual Science/Technology Medal Dinner at Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, N.J. The dinner also honors this year's Science/Technology Medal winner, Mr. Douglas G. Watson, retired Chairman and CEO of Novartis C rporation located in Summit, N.J.

The Research & Development Council is a non-profit organization that works to cultivate an environment that supports the advancement of research and development activity throughout New Jersey.

The R&D Council has about 90 member companies.
