RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL OF NEW JERSEY HONORS DR. JAMES FLANAGAN WITH SCIENCE/TEHCNOLOGY MEDAL

Denville, N.J., September 26, 2000 — The Research and Development (R&D) Council of New Jersey will honor Dr. James Flanagan, Vice President of Research at Rutgers University, with the prestigious Science/Technology Medal. Dr. Flanagan is also Board of Governors Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the Rutgers Center for Advanced Information Processing (CAIP).

Awarded annually, the Science/Technology Medal acknowledges the role of senior management in research and development innovations. Dr. Flanaganıs dedication to education and research has been evident throughout his illustrious career. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Mississippi State University and a M.S. and Sc.D. in Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Flanagan has specialized in voice communications, computer techniques and electroacoustic systems, and has authored approximately 200 papers, two books, and 50 patents.

Dr. Flanaganıs honors include the National Medal of Science, presented by the President of the United States, the L.M. Ericsson International Prize in Telecommunications, presented by the King of Sweden, the Edison Medal of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Medal of the European Speech Communication Association, the Gold Medal of the Acoustical Society of America, and the Marconi International Fellowship, presented by the Crown Prince of Spain. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Sciences, as well as other esteemed groups.

Dr. Flanagan joined Rutgers after extended service in research and research management at Bell Laboratories, where he was Director of Information Principles Research, with responsibilities in digital communications and information systems. Recently, he has been asked to help create a Research and Development organization for the new company, Avaya, a spin-off of Lucent Technologies. Avayaıs technical focus is communications, networking, and computing, primarily for business applications.

Dr. Flanagan will receive the Science/Technology Medal at the R&D Councilıs Annual Awards Dinner held at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, NJ, on November 9th, 2000.

The Research and Development Council is a non-profit organization that works to cultivate an environment that supports the advancement of research and development activity throughout New Jersey.

The R&D Council has about 90 member companies.
