As we approach the one-year anniversary of the New Jersey Nanotechnology Consortium (NJNC), I wanted to update our customers, partners and potential consortium members of some recent changes that have been made with the leadership team and structure of the NJNC.

After closely monitoring its progress against financial, operational and business objectives, we have decided to continue the NJNC as a New Jersey-incorporated, wholly-owned subsidiary of Lucent Technologies, and we have also selected a new Bell Labs management team to oversee its operations. This subsidiary will continue to conduct business as the NJNC, with the goals of advancing nanotechnology R&D and fostering regional economic development. We will continue to solicit institutional, university and industry memberships in keeping with the consortium spirit.

I have assumed the duties and title of chairperson for the NJNC, and I am extremely pleased to announce that Dr. David Bishops, currently Bel Labs' vice president of optical networking research and communications subsystems, has assumed the role of President of the NJNC, and Bell Labs vice president of Nanotechnology Research. As you may know, Larry Thompson recently stepped down as the NJNC's interim chairman and CEO; Ellery Buchanan has also stepped down as executive vice president of business development.

Dave Bishop, a Bell Labs Fellow and a widely recognized leader in nanotechnology R&D, helped build the world-renowned Bell Labs Micromechanics Research department, the team that led the development of the world's first all-optical Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) switch, the LambdaRouter.

We are also pleased to announce that the renowned micromechanics research team currently supported by Dave will now be working closely with the NJNC in the Nanotechnology Research Lab. Led by Susanne Arney, the Microsystems Research Department, an accomplished global R&D leader in MEMS technology, will help enhance the consortium's depth, technical capabilities and expertise.

We are also pleased to announce that John Gates, currently Director, Bell Labs Subsystem Research, assumes the role of Director, Bell Labs Nanofabrication Research, and will manage the day-to-day operations of the NJNC, supported by Dave Bishop. Thus, Lucent's and Bell Labs' continued corporate support for nanotechnology will ultimately strengthen the NJNC's world-class status in this exciting field of emerging technologies.

If you have any questions regarding membership of any facet of the NJNC or our operations, please contact Dave Bishop at 908-582-3927 or djb@lucent.com, who will be reaching out to current and potential customers and members in the next few weeks.

We believe that there are tremendous opportunities in the field of nanotechnology and the NJNC looks forward to serving your needs with our world-class nanotechnology research and development capabilities and our leading-edge facility. Please do not hesitate to call Dave Bishop or me directly at the above number if I can be of assistance regarding any questions, issues or concerns you may have about the NJNC.
